Viagra Information Sheet

Your physician has prescribed Viagra (sildenafil) as treatment for erectile dysfunction. Viagra has been extensively evaluated for efficacy and safety and is approved by the FDA for the treatment of erectile dysfunction. Like all other medicines, it should be taken as directed.

Viagra does not work in everyone. You will be given a trial of Viagra to see if it will work for you. Please perform the trial as indicated and make a follow-up visit with your doctor or nurse to discuss the results. Depending upon the results, the medication will have to be ordered or alternative therapy will need to be discussed.

General comments:

  1. Viagra has no effect in the absence of sexual stimulation; it merely augments blood flow to the penis. You must provide sexual stimulation (foreplay, masturbation and/or sexual videos) to your penis in order for Viagra to help with increasing the effectiveness of your erections.
  2. You must take Viagra ½-1 hour before you plan to have intercourse. The duration of effect for the medication is approximately 4 hours.
  3. Take the Viagra on an empty stomach. A large fatty meal will delay the absorption and effectiveness of the Viagra.
  4. The most common side effects of Viagra are:
  5. There has been only a 2.3% drop out rate over long term use related to the side effects noted above. Higher doses have higher incidence of side effects.
  6. There are no reported cases of priapism (extended erections longer than 4 hours).
  7. Taking more than the prescribed dose will not enhance the action of the drug; it may only increase its side effects.
  8. Viagra should only be taken once in a 24-hour period/day.
  9. VIAGRA SHOULD NEVER BE TAKEN WITH NITROGLYCERIN OR OTHER NITRATE MEDICATIONS (ISORDIL, NITRODUR, NITROSTAT, ETC.) IT CAN BE FATAL IN COMBINATION WITH THESE HEART DRUGS. If you have heart disease discuss this with your physician before starting Viagra.
  10. Your trial will consist of six, double strength (100mg) tablets and a pill cutter. For the first four doses, take one half of one pill (50mg). If that is not effective and you are not having any side effects take a whole pill (100mg) the next time.
  11. Drink no more than two drinks of alcohol in the same 24-hour period that you take Viagra.
  12. Do not use with other medications for erections unless instructed by your physician/urologist. Viagra can be used with MUSE or penile injections if tested first at your urologists office.

If you follow the instructions, you should be able to take Viagra safely. Remember to make an appointment with your urologist office after you complete the trial medications to report how things went. We will then give you a refillable prescription or discuss alternatives with you depending upon these results.

I have read the above instructions and understand the technique, the physician or the erectile dysfunction nurse has adequately instructed me multiple times in the office.
